List the exclusions
The real total, not the headline.
Resort fees, transfers, gratuities and the excursion nobody mentioned were in it.
Advertised travel prices are assembled to win a comparison, not to describe a holiday. Resort fees charged at the property, gratuities added daily on a cruise, port charges, transfers from an airport an hour away — each is genuinely optional in a technical sense and effectively compulsory in practice.
Quoting the real total sometimes makes our number look worse than a website's and almost always makes it lower in the end. It also means the comparison between two cruises or two resorts is a fair one, which it otherwise is not.
The other half is being clear about who is liable. An agent books with suppliers and those suppliers provide the travel; if one of them fails, insurance and payment protections are what stand between a traveller and a loss. Saying that before a booking is worth far more than apologising for it afterwards.
